What's your favorite Christmas movie? and why? I have a soft spot in my heart for "Meet Me in St. Louis". While most of the movie is over-the-top silly and mostly an excuse for Judy Garland and Margaret O'Brien to sing and dance around (and to show off some fabulous costumes and sets), the scene where Garland sings "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" always makes me cry like a baby. (even with the creepy monkey music box she's holding lol) The perfect Christmas song, full of melancholy and hope, beautifully shot, beautifully sung. Just a photo of me looking at a bird and not being sucked in by, you guessed it: "Rage bait". Oxford recently named rage bait the 2025 Word of the Year. Last year their word was "brain rot". While spending time on social media (including LI) can be fun and offer many opportunities to learn, it's also a place where people can vent. And that venting isn't always pretty. I've had people comment on the most benign posts of mine. I then watch as others get sucked in. It makes me sad to see so much hate in the world, especially at this beautiful time of year, when the snow makes everything so calm and peaceful in nature. What does it take to step away from the "rage bait" and trolls? I'm a classical musician by training, and here's one thing I've noticed over the years: People don't notice what goes on behind the scenes. While coaching is my "main gig" right now, I still play music professionally every winter (26 seasons with the Sarasota Opera — shout-out to my musician friends down in Florida!). I pick up my horn every October to "remember" how to play. The muscle memory is there, but it takes a good 3 months of fine-tuning to get to a place where I feel comfortable performing in public. My colleagues would say, "It's amazing how you can just pick up the horn and sound that good after not playing for 6 months!" Which is nice, but, here's the thing: I don't just "pick up the horn and sound good". I put a lot of f***ing hard work into getting back into shape. This work is done in the solitude of my practice studio - and is very much unnoticed. I've noticed a similar theme in my coaching conversations; a lot of the work happens in between sessions: - Our brains un-wire and re-wire thoughts. - Our bodies unlearn and relearn a different way of holding itself in the world. - Our hearts slowly release the past and open up to the present. I invite my clients to acknowledge this work that goes on between sessions, even if no one else does. And: just because no one is watching doesn't mean it's not worth it. What work (inner or outer) are you doing that the world doesn't see...?
